Some minor help required with old VCR

Hello All,
I picked up a cheap VCR for $10, supposed to be in
good working condition. Heh heh heh.....

Akai model number VS-G405EA

The unit plays tapes OK
Will record OK
For ten dollars it is great but it has a little problem.

I can press the channel up/down buttons and receive
channels 7, 9, 10 and SBS but CH 2 is missing.
Murphy's law here. I am an ABC fan.
There is also an annoying line of blinking bars at the top left
of the TV picture, possibly for setting the date on the VCR.
I would like to get rid of these also.

Unfortunately the VCR did not come with a remote control
unit and I think the remote control may be necessary to
program in CH 2 . If that is the case I can put up with it.

Should anyone know of a way to press the buttons on
the VCR or fiddle the insides of the machine to recieve
CH 2 , or get rid of the flashing bars on the TV screen that
would be nice.

New remotes are not availble for this old model, I was told.
Anyone have a shoebox full of old remotes?
This is all a long shot I know, but I had to ask. :)

Try Speedy Spares in Victoria, they claim to have every remotes and manuals.

You will need the original as well, as the Preprogrammed units that you can
buy do not have the Menu setup buttons to store your TV Stations in..

Hello Elton and Allan,
thankyou for responding so quickly.
Usenet is great! :)

Speedy Spares could not help with that model VCR
(Akai VS-G405EA) but they did put me on to
Enfield Electronics here in Sydney 9715 2448.
They do not have any remotes right now but will get
some in soon. $69.95

Something will turn up even if I just borrow one to
enter in channel 2 and sort the blinking date cursor.
Thanks again for your help Gents.

Hello Andy,
that is very good of you, Usenet at its best again. Excellent.
Yes, I am a tight arse. Most of my household appliances
and the spares for them come from council kerb side
clean ups. I get a kick out of bringing stuff back to life.
Lashing out $10 on a VCR at an auction was way out
of character. Heh heh heh.....
Bob Parker's little ESR meter has helped me rescue a few
VCRs from going to the tip. Thanks Bob. :)
That reminds me. I should return it to my friend.
Yup, electronics can still be fun without spending
a fortune on the hobby. Great Eh!

If you are that tight you should be able to work out how to reprogram
it without the remote!

I'm pretty sure you can do it from the front panel. (If I remember the
model right). Use the buttons underneath the tape slot. When you first
turn it on it is expecting the time to be entered. Two buttons cycle
through each digit, another two move to the next (previous) digit.

Cheers,

Mark
Hello Mark,
thanks for responding and trying to sort this one out.
I think you must be thinking of a different model.
Under the tape slot is the flourescent display module
(or whatever) there are no buttons underneath they
are on the right hand side.

When the power button is in standby mode
the time would be displayed. I have --:-- displayed.
I have fiddled all the buttons trying. Nothing happens
because it is in standyby mode.

When the power button is ON the clock dissapears
and all the usual symbols come up.

Anyway Mark, thanks for trying. :)
I appreciate that.
Regards,
John Crighton
