My guess would be:

1N4733
.5 watt 5.1 volt zener
I thought 1N814 might be in the 1N74x series of zeners, but Newark doesn't
list it, so I'm guessing 1N914 with a crappy screen.

I agree on the 1N4733.

The 1N814 is a silicon signal diode, it is _not_ a zener diode.
According to my Moto manual, PRV=40V, Vf=1.0 @ 2mA, Ir=0.1uA, Trr=.25uS.

I agree on the 1N4733.

Well, I just took a WAG, as it's apparently a grab-bag, and figured that
the 1N914 would be more likely to show up in a grab-bag. ;-)

Notwithstanding that just because I've never heard of one doesn't mean it
doesn't exist! ;-)

I think your info is coming from misleading ads for software that
produces VCD disks, which are primarily an Asian pirate movie format.
Most DVD players will play VCD disks, with VHS quality rather than DVD
quality.

Look around for "germicidal lamps". I believe that quite a few EPROM
erasers use the G4T5, which is the same shape and size and electrically
compatible with a 4 watt fluorescent bulb.
It may be a different wattage - look at fluorescent bulbs at a hardware
store or a home center and if you see one of the same size and lead style,
the wattage is that of the EPROM bulb. The EPROM bulb would then be
G(wattage)T(diameter in eights of an inch)

That is assuming the bulb is the usual germicidal that resembles a
fluorescent bulb. These are basically fluorescent lamps that lack
phosphor and are made with a special glass (usually not pure quartz) that
is transparent to the 253.7 nm wavelength of mercury.

As others have pointed out, it is ridiculous. The main difference
between a DVD and a CD is the size of the structures on the disk.
This relates to the wavelength (=color) of the laser. CDs work with
infrared, DVD with red light. Dual drives normally have two different
lasers.

Umm, I thought it was IR and blue light? Or maybe that was the
dual-layer discs?

BTW, have you seen those "expiring DVD's" yet? They have an
oxygen-reacting polymer on the readable side that turns red 72 hours
after opening. This allows the disc to be readable for only three
days. Hmmm, is three days long enough to copy a DVD? I think so...

-M
Also an easy item to bypass... Five gallon bucket + CO2 fire
extinguisher - CO2 is heavier than air. Shoot bucket full of CO2. Open
package at bottom of bucket. Use a clear coat of some sort - varnish,
laquer, or similar, and paint the disk. Let dry. Presto - Disk doesn't
self-destruct, 'cause as far as it's concerned, it hasn't been opened.

Of course, I'll not be attempting this, since I'll *NEVER* buy such a
product in the first place.

You're not buying anything, you're renting a movie DVD,
without having to return the DVD when you're done. So
the price should be no more than at a rental store, and
there should be 5 and 7-day versions, like the store.
Sheeesh! I just wait for movies to be out of the theaters for six
months, then buy them if they've been well-reviewed. I'm up to about
350 movies now (I just bought a set of uncommon Hitchcock oldies).
Needless to say I don't watch much regular TV ;-)

That's a fine choice, but it's $15 to $25, vs. about
$5 for recent top movies, so it's a choice. There are
lots of movies I only want to see once, so I'll pay $5.

There are movies I'd prefer to buy. I'm still looking
for a copy of The Gods Must Be Crazy.
Tell me where to send it. Our local Wally-world has three rows of it on
the shelf as of yesterday at about 6PM local time.

I'd say that, for somebody who actually wants to _buy_ a copy of a movie,
that's pretty reasonable. It's still cheaper than going to the movies
once, if you include popcorn and the other crap.

There are very few movies I want to see more than once. I'd pay for a Marx
Brothers collection, for example. "Who's on first" is also handy to have
around if the party bogs down. ;-)

There have been movies that were so good that I went to them twice. I went
to "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" about seven times, but that was
primarily so that I could finally hear all the jokes in between the
laughter and other miscellaneous audience noises. "Baseketball," however,
I want my money back.

"The Butterfly Effect"
"Adventures in Babysitting"

I'd pay for a copy of Fantasia. My mom took us to see Fantasia, and we
couldn't see the movie because the film wouldn't fit in the projector. )-;

Then again, not too long ago, I saw a _preview_ for the reissue of
"Bambi", and it made me get all choked up.

I made up a joke movie title once: There's this little baby fawn deer,
whose mom is killed by a hunter. So when he grows up and gets antlers, he
goes on this vengeful murderous rampage, antlering to death every hunter
he can find. It's called "Bambo."

Cheers!

What's wrong with it, that it is being sold??? I know of most cases where
people bought screens in eBay, and there was something found to be defective
in some way or another.

The most common problems were screen burns, and or thermo related faults.

You don't need any specific info on the boom box. The WP sensor is a
leaf-type contact, easily bridged with a switch or relay (or just short
it out permanently as a simple hack). The record button is potentially
a bit more complicated as it sometimes engages a very complicated
multipole selector switch.

Audio input is probably easiest routed through disabling the CD player
and tying into the audio path there. Some quick probing with a scope
should reveal everything one needs to know.

The reality is that most of the experts here are old and rich and very
knowledgeble people who enjoy writing explanations, old engineers and
writers of technical books. Such people have no need for small sums of
money, less than 10000 dollars won't even get them off their chairs.
Ouch. I've written magazine articles, two technical books, am working
on my third (as well as another series of articles for IBM), and I
generally like writing explanations here and elsewhere. But I offered
this guy to get out of my chair and do his little project for much less
than 10k. I guess it must be because I'm not old. THAT must be the
secret. Old people must have such difficulty rising from a seated
position that they require stacks of cash - preferably in singles - to
chock them up step by step. From an engineering standpoint, that's the
most logical explanation, right?

Mr. Larwe, you've explained that your newsreader doesn't quote -
but couldn't you be so kind as to at least type in whom it is you're

Copying and pasting some relevant text would go a long way toward
understanding what the heck you're talking about, as well, as you seem to
have done here, except with no name.
