I saw this in 'bt3a'

"I wonder could you help me", enquires Neil,
"about two years ago I was out on the piste,
and on the way home I found this box. It's a
normal cigar box but inside it's full of these
little pieces of paper, ranging from really
thin to card thickness. I've not a clue what
this could be for and I reckon it to be the
product of a deranged mind or something."

Most definitely not for making bobbles - the centre hole is *far* too
small. They appear to be of two diameters; I'd bet that the larger ones
are the same diameter as cotton reels and the smaller ones the same
diameter as 'bobbins' - the small metal reels which you load with cotton
for use on a sewing machine underneath the needle. The centre holes
look to be the right size as both the above have similar sized holes, so
I suspect they're involved in sewing.

The fact that there are many of differing thicknesses suggests that
they're for applying tension to the thread from reels and bobbins on a
sewing machine.

What did you say the prize was?

Cheers

They appear to be punchings for a piano. These are shims in various
thicknesses made of paper, fiber board and felt that go under the keys of a
piano to level the keys to the same height. The felts are used to quiet the
action and reduce the thump when a key is played. Piano technicians often
made these themselves out of news paper or whatever was handy. The box also
appears to have some ivory strips for repair of piano keys.

Go surf rec.puzzles for awhile, and spot the guy who does the "What Is It"
thing on his blog. Submit this, and you'll have an answer in a day.

It looks to me like little grinder pads, but they're small, so
maybe kinda like sequins or beads to be strung, but why newspaper?

Thanks!

Just because there's a crude sketch of an upright piano on the inside of
the box lid. I demand a recount.

But why are there two sizes - are they different for the black and white
notes?

Cheers

Sorry, I looked on the internet and didn't see shims associated with
pianos... But! I'm sure there will be a reference to them somewhere... so
you can have a lucky bag... Because Bob will have taken the imaginary grand
prize of a week for 2 in the Bahamas...

ok? :O)

I kind of cheated. I have rebuilt several pianos also tune them and regulate
their actions. I've probably puched out 1000 of these little shims myself so
it was pretty obvious what they were when I saw them. Seeing what appear to
be ivories in the box was a dead giveaway.

You didn't cheat at all. The question was asked and you knew what the
answer was because you'd been there and done that, unlike that Jim
Thompson character who merely hazarded a guess and happened to get
lucky with that shim sham scam.

Good for you!
