VCR contrast streaks

Hi, all. This is my first post to this group, so please
forgive me if this issue has been done to death.

My old VCR (Magnavox VR9720AT01) has started
showing noisy black streaks in light areas that are
to the right of dark areas. For example, a dark sailboat
mast will show a fringe of black streaks in the sky to
the right of it, and white titles are really streaky.
This doesn't seem to be affected by head cleaning,
like other (random) streaking.

Any ideas? I know that with VCRs so cheap these
days it is hardly worth my time to mess with this, but
I'd like to keep it out of the landfill if is is something
not too difficult.

PS: I have a strong electronics background and a
100 MHz scope and other general test equipment,
but no VCR experience.

Thanks you very much for your time.

Bob Masta:
First things first...... a complete, thorough and proper cleaning... see
the website for this newsgroup at
http://www.repairfaq.org/
If you see the streaks with ALL tapes and it can not be minimized by
manually tracking (with the remote) then the symptoms you described could be
caused by worn out video heads (upper drum assembly).

Bad video head. Sorry. Cleaning might fix a snowy type picture, but the
black/white reversal at the edges is a classic video head problem.
