A novel way to clean dirty dead lasers is an ultrasonic (43khz) bath with
isopropyl alchohol and hot water.
Thats right stuff the whole assembly and slide rack in.
10 to 15 mins cleans the lenses and the hot water (80c) facilitates quick
drying with a bit of hairdryer after.
Works on dvd, cd and cdr players.
You might laugh but it works and maybe is after 30 years servicing my legacy
to the service trade.
They cost about HK$600 here, about 50 quid. Cleans your nails too.

Not really a surprise, considering that some optical pickup blocks stop
functioning due to internal dust accumulation. Others, however, do actually
wear out. - Reinhart
