Hello;

I have a Sony SLV-750HF with erratic capstan speed.
Looks very much like capstan assy. because it responds
to tapping on the PCB right under the cap motor only.
I cleaned and resoldered connectors in that area, but little change.

Can anyone give me a Sony part no# for that beast ?
Thanks,

Rick

I assume you've ruled out a worn bearing causing it to rub against the
coils?

Bearing kit from MCM, Sony part # X-2625-356-2. Price about $6-7. The only
problem they have a $25 minimum. Try www.iglou.com/studiosound/ . They don't
have a minimum order.

No, I haven't ruled out a bad bearing !

Thanks for mentioning it, I WILL check it out.

Rick

How does one verify a bad capstan
bearing ?

Should there be "play" in the capstan shaft ?

Thanks again,
Rick

With that chassis, when the bearing goes bad you will hear a faint
"whish-whish" sound as the capstan rotates. It is dragging on the motor
coils. Another symptom, it will be playing & will suddenly go into "pause".
If you let it go too long, the motor windings will be damaged beyond repair
& will require the entire motor be replaced.
