VHF ends at channel 12 (230MHz) and UHF begins at channel 28 (526MHz). What
is this range of 230-526MHz allocated for? (What kinds of things utilise
frequencies in this range)

Check with ACA spectrum management. They have a list online. BTW, the
VHF and UHF bands don't have a gap between them, that's just how they're
licensed for broadcasting here. Other countries have different schemes
(although some alignment is attempted by the ITU)
