OT: NAV and Eudora

Suffice to say that was not an option (at the time), because then i
would have no AV software.
I would have gotten the refund, and just not downloaded and executed
anything until I either got another AV program or installed a proper
operating system, like Linux. :)

For the stuff I need to do in Doze, I've got a windows box that can't
even see or be seen from outside the firewall; the only thing it can
access on the LAN is the Samba shares.

You can do this with one computer - just dual-boot, and disable the
network in Windows, and shuttle files back and forth on a FAT partition.

It is true that you can't do Windows Update, but the only thing WU
is for is plugging security holes - all of the S/W I need runs just
fine with a plain vanilla out of the box W2K pro, and security
holes are moot: no internet == no viri. :) (also no spyware, no
spamware, no trojans, no etc., etc., etc. ...)

And I do email at Yahoo.

Cheers!
Rich

The problem mentioned is seen on a brand new computer, fresh out the
gate.
I do not think that running under Win2K or under WinXP makes any
difference.
However, your version of NAV us newer; mine is NAV 2001 ver 7.00.51F .
Perhaps the newer version is smarter?

Sheeeesh! Are you even on subscription for updates? One of the past
versions, can't remember which now, had some severe problems with
other programs... something to do with LiveUpdate. But they issued a
fix within days of it cropping up.

...Jim Thompson

The one i have does not "see" the file for "liveupdate" to work.
I had contacted Symantec for a solution, and had to write 5 times,as
they consistently gave bad info (usually instructions that were
impossible to follow).
The last time i gave them hell and they said "well, take it back for
a refund".
Suffice to say that was not an option (at the time), because then i
would have no AV software.
So i kept it and manually download the "intelligent" updater often.
If there ever was a fix, they sure as hell said nothing to me, and i
saw no mention of any fix until now (too many days late, umpteen dollars
short).

Hmmmmm! I found the fix on their website when I had the problem.
IIRC it was as simple as deleting the original Liveupdate.exe and then
clicking the Liveupdate button in NAV to restore everything.

Are you paying annual subscription? If not, you are SOL.

...Jim Thompson
Why pay, when the "intelligent" updater is free (been using it for
near 3 years now)?

Looks like the combo works under WinXP but not Win98. My combo of
Mozilla/Email and AntiVir seems to work well on Win98. However, I
seldom use my native account for email. Yahoo scans for viruses.
Better them than me.

NAV screwed up so many things on my system, that I just blew off the $60
I paid for it and went back to AntiVir. As far as I'm concerned, if
Norton cant make it work right on Win98, they should not sell it for
that OS.

Are you fully upgraded on your Win98? The only copy of Win98 I ever
had contact with was on my wife's machine and it was a dog. I did
every upgrade in the book before it became even reasonably stable.

My OS history started at DOS -> WFW 3.11 -> WinNT 3.51 -> WinNT 4.0 -
Win2K

I never did Win98 and, judging from the wife's machine, I'm so glad
;-)

I understand that Win98 was a bit of a dog, but that Win98Se fixed
most of the problems.

That's my recollection as well, but it still had quirks. Last summer
I bought the wife a faster machine and put Win2K on it also... end of
problems altogether.

Now that we on the subject, I see I'm running Win98SE.

For now, I prefer "The Devil I Know". :{

Has WINE left a bad taste in you mouth (go for it  ) or haven't you
bothered trying it?
Seems better than a reboot, if it will run your app.
I haven't tried it yet, but I have serious doubts as to whether Autocad
Mechanical Desktop would be very happy on it. Heck, it (MDT) even fixes
some Windows problems! :)

Thanks,
Rich

Doesn't seem to be on their web page yet, but there's a Win4Lin Pro that
runs win2k and winxp in an Xwindow. You install the real windows CD and
apps run just as well as on a windows box. You can even paste between
windows clip-board and an X window.

I currently use win4lin 5 in debian-sid. Whenever windows needs to reboot,
it amounts to the X window closing then starting up 5 seconds later;)

While that's better than what Rich is doing,
you still have to pay The Microsoft Tax(tm).
I'm looking forward to the day when the set of APIs in WINE
is comprehensive enuf (and latency for cloning new APIs is low)
for us all to permanantly turn our backs on Redmond.
The point is that anyone currently using M$ windows should
already have the CD, so it's just a re-install of what you
already have. Only if you actually want new windows apps
that need an OS upgrade will you get stuck with the M$ tax.
I only use M$ windows to run what i have until i find/write
a linux replacement.

I currently use...debian-sid.

Like to live on the wild side, do we?
