OT: Boy, did I get screwed. Thanks a lot, Norton.

Today I got the message pop-up that I need to renew my Norton
antivirus.
Little did I know the journey of horror that was about to begin.
For about ten hours now, with some short breaks to go for walks, I have
been working on overcoming the problems that began when I tried to
update. If I could just cut my losses I would, let them keep their
forty bucks. But it has messed up my computer.
Now, when I restart the computer it takes an eternity for the icons to
appear on my desktop. So I am trying to get to the end of this process
of repeated phone calls to Symantec and ENDLESS waits... one virus scan
they had me do ran for about six hours then vanished and an error
message appeared. Right now it's trying to connect to Live Update, and
of course it is stuck.
Now for the question I had in mind when I started typing: which
newsgroup is the most appropriate to go to for help with this? In the
past, when I had a Windows or computer-related question and selected a
newgroup that looked like it was devoted to that particular subject,
invariably someone would tell me it was not the right newsgroup to ask
that question in.
I have a Toshiba Satellite with windowsXP.

If this is your personal computer download AVG from
http://www.free.grisoft.com and toss Norton into the trash where it
belongs. The free version is not for business use.

Another hearty endorsement for AVG! (I got the SoHo version).
Ad-Aware is worthwhile too, but at least get AVG.

Sounds like you have two different versions installed simultaneously.
CTRL-ALT-DEL and end the CCxxxx type tasks until the machine suddenly
starts responding. Then remove all versions and start over with
something other than a Norton product.

They're idiots, they can't help you.

I have been told by an IT professional that Norton is the worst
anti-virus system on the market. Based on my horrific experiences with
it, I would say that there is probably a reason for that assesment.
This same person recommended one called Euido, which I personally use.
It seems to be effective, unobtrusive, and very light weight.

Hmm, I also hate norton. Norton haters club we got here:)
If you have under control panel, system restore active. You may be able to
back your system to a date it was working ok. Then un-install norton and
get grisoft avg. (www.grisoft.com).
You wont be sorry you did. Jim

Is it possible to do a system restore to a date before Norton became a
pain and then just uninstall Norton? System restore is pretty easy with
XP.

There was a virus company that recently screwed up their updates and
tons of systems around the world. For their large corporate customers
they had their guys go to the sites. For others you had to download
some type of special fix to get you back to normal, this may be the
company (Norton) as I have forgotten the name.

I agree with the others. Just about anything by Norton is a virus. Get
AVG.

SO true.... and the latest Norton AV finds 'virus' and trojans in the
latest update of ACT!... which winfax doesn't integrate with properly
anymore either.... ahhgghhh

Do you have any fields nearby with horses in them? It might be worth asking
the horse on this one.. ;)

Norton, it's an absolute nightmare, brewed from the age of the millenium
bug. If you're going to get a virus you're going to get one so the time
would be better spent in getting your recovery and common-sense prevention
procedures in place than messing about with this dreadful piece of software.
Used to install it in the corporate environment, time and time again I
rebuilt the same old laptops over and over.

As someone has already said in this thread, Norton is the virus.
