By far the best plan is to buy a charger designed for your battery.

The good news is that nothing is compulsory.
The bad news is that everything is prohibited.

MAXIM has lots of battery charger ICs and app notes.

Assuming (at that capacity) that it is a sealed lead acid, I personally favour
the Unitrode/TI UC3906 controller chip. Download the app note for this chip and
you will learn quite a lot about the care and feeding of SLA's. There are also
kits for chargers using this controller.

Might be cheaper just to buy a jump-start battery. Sears has 'em on
sale for about $40 in the automotive section. About 10 Amp-hours IIRC.
You get a built-in battery charger that stops charging when the
battery's fully charged, a DC-out plug, and, as an added bonus, two
monster clips just in case your car battery needs a jump.

Good luck!
