Whenever I see a flag like that, either in someone's front yard or draped
over some yob's shoulders, I just think they've got no clue what it means
to be Australian, rather, to save thinking about it, they've just
imported some sad, empty US version of "patriotism", which in itself is a
questionable ideal (and reality).

What shit :) What the fuck is wrong with being proud of our flag for
fuck's sake?

I don't go waving it all over the place, but I'm *very* proud of it, and
see nothing wrong with anyone else waving it about if that's *their* way
of showing *their* pride.
That's my point - Australian's have never been about waving it over the
place - it's un-Australian. We don't need to wave a bit of rag about to
prove we love our country - a real Australian takes it for granted. It's
only recently that people have started to imitate the US obsession, and when
they have, it's not really about pride in their country, rather it's been to
differentiate themselves as "real" Australians as opposed to those who don't
wave the flag, in doing so painting them as unworthy of being here.

You don't have to be a backward arsed fucking hick Yank just because
you're proud of your own flag.
True, you don't have to be a stupid, insecure, often violent, racisct
fuckhead to drape the flag over your shoulders, but strangely enough,
they're the ones who do.

They're struggling to establish a sense of cultural identity and use the
flag as a symbol. The difference is that ordinary Australians don't have
that problem - we have a very strong, inherent sense of being Australian. We
don't feel the need to prove it to anyone and we probably couldn't tell
anyone what it is to be Australian, but we know it. Unfortunately indigenous
Australians haven't reached that point.

That overpatriotic nonsense and Chinese made flag waving is not the
Australian way, it reeks of Americansation and is shortchanging our own
cultural identity. The Australian way is to not overstate what is already
understood.

That's the way I see it anyway.
