Dick Smith doing business with Jaycar's Gary Johnston?

I was working for Dick at the time and Dick sent Gary out to investigate
this company; he came back and said it was not worth it and then he bought
it;
On his weekly Dick's Video, Dick was not a happy camper; flack jackets were
issued.

Ike Bain is a canadian and he was responsible for moving the company on from
10 stores in 1979.

We also had a goose parading as the marketing manager, he left and started
up ZAP electronics; I think it lasted a ZAP!

I caught the end of some doco on ABC tonight about Tricky Dick Smith.
They were filming him working in his office and he was showing how he
didn't need nor use a computer, and dictated all his stuff to the
secretary. He demonstrated this by reading a memo into the dictation
machine something along the lines of "To Gary Johnston. I am not happy
with a 30% margin and am looking for 40%" or something to that effect.
This looked like an exhibition of Dick's wry sense of humour; abit of a poke
in the eye for Gary, I would think! LOL!.

Could be some other Gary Johnston of course, or he could have just
made it up on the spot, but I thought it was a pretty co-incidental
name.

Anyone know?

BTW, he mentioned that DSE now a billion dollars turnover, and that he
would love to see DSE be around long after he's gone.

Dave.

Hi Dave,

Gary was an employee of DSE in the late 70s and early 80s. Some sort of
falling out between the him and Dick saw him leave and start Jaycar. I
think there was mention of him in Dicks biography by Ike Bain, infact I
recall that Gary posted a "right of reply" about some statements made in
the book through an edition of Silicon Chip.
