There have been reports of ye olde TO3 transistors with a silicon die size
that would compete with a TO92 style transistor.
Works great under test meter conditions, goes pop under real-life use.

I never saw the point of the expense of the TO3 case verses the
insignificant saving in silicon to make the scam worthwhile, but then again,
no-one said scammers had to be smart...

This was some time back, so I wouldn't be surprised to still see scams such
as these around today.

Hilarious!

Would be even funnier if the scammers got scammed, what's inside the
2200uF cap I wonder?

Surely if you were going to go to the trouble you'd at least match the
voltage?? And maybe throw in some ballast so it isn't the same weight as an
'AA' battery from clints.

** Who do you imagine is the target of the scam ??

It's not manufacturers or any reputable component wholesalers for starters.

I wonder if it's "Joe Master" brand of electros which you commonly
find available at Dick Smith's and which I've had problems with in the
past.

I understand they they likely end up as 'surplus' on Ebay. However, if the
pop when first powerd up the buyer is less likely to think "I still have
ripple on the rails of my Amp...best get some more of those caps and really
beef it up" :)

Hi Don

To change the subject but slightly ...

Have you received that Asus notebook tht you wrote about earlier ?

If so, how do you like it ?

I am really keen to to get one but so far I can't find one in WA. I
would be very interested to hear about your experience with ordering
one from overseas.

I ended up with two Dave.
One from Taiwan, one from Dick Smith NZ, who I think like everyone else,
(except Taiwan) is now out of stock.

Myer has (had) them in OZ, but all went out the door quickly. Most
shoppers didn't get to see the demo models.

Fantastic is my estimate.

Only ever been really grabbed by 3 home market computers:
1) TRS-80, 4K rom, 4K ram in 1978.
2) Atari Portfolio, Dos in a video cassette size package. 1992.
3) Asus EEE PC. Linux (/XP compatible) 8Gig drive, 1Gig ram. 2007.

With the EEE-PC, Only problem is after installing XP and a few basic
programs, I only have 1 gig left on the SSD drive.

So I just ordered another 2, but this time I ordered the 8G version,
that has double the SSD size. That will leave me 5 gig for programs.

Where from?
http://stores.ebay.com/asources-apple-computer
Keyboard is English/Chinese, and manual is Chinese, but English pdf is
on the web, and Chinese keyboard isn't noticeable after a little use.
Well I just ordered two, so I don't seem to care. :)

User group is now massive. I kid you not.
http://forum.eeeuser.com/index.php

I got a $59 Logitech wireless kbd/mouse from officeworks and have one
running on that to a 17" LCD, and got my wife to do her thing on it. She
didn't notice any difference from what she normally uses, which is an
Intel P4 3Ghz.

Every thing I have plugged into the USB ports has worked. I do backups
with Acronis to a USB hard drive, my normal daily method of doing things.

I look like getting the Vodafone special $39 5gig a month plan, so I can
use this thing nation wide, and globally as well. It has an external USB
3G modem. See:
<http://www.vodafone.com.au/Business/BusinessSolutions/VodafoneMobileBroadband/Howmuchdoesitcost/HotOffer5GBMobileBroadband/index.htm>

The Londoners are riding the train to work with these things on their
laps, hooked up to the internet.

I sold one of the EEE-PC 4G units to a friend, who wants to set it up as
a low power file sever, and the other I think I will have to save for
another friend.

Do a search on OZ Ebay, I think there are a few 4G models there already.

Cheers Don...

As is mine. I got my grubby hands on one (a grey taiwanese import)
for $600 the day before Myer started selling them for $500. The
Taiwanese keyboard is fine, has everything in the same places as
US-English.

The only trap for young players insofar as getting winders on it is
that you need to change an "OS" setting in BIOS to "setup" else
winders won't find the USB CD in the second stage install. Otherwise,
they're an absolutely bloody marvelous bit of kit, and you'd be mad
not to own at least one!

My experience is consistent with Don's. Everything I threw at it,
it did, without question. I have quite a bit more free space left on
the 4Gb model than he has on the 8Gb though (even after installing
WindersXP, OfficeXP, Firefox, Foxit Reader, anti virus and PDF
Creator (all the things that the punters in my office will expect).
A streamlined and stripped-down winders install is your friend.

Even with the Taiwan version, the accompanying DVD includes all
English manuals and English drivers and is very thorough.

The machine is so well thought out that it even has RAM in a
very standard DDR2 SO DIMM under a panel on the bottom. The first
thing I did was pop out the 512Mb piece and replace it with 2Gb
(which the machine accepted happily).

It's a brilliant little computer. Buy some!

GB, I have two more on order!

My wife thinks I am trying to corner the market.
I got two, sold one, and bought another two. But then, I wanted to
upgrade to the 8G models.

I also needed dial-up, and they weren't supported, so I grabbed a couple
of very small $62 Swann USB modems, works a treat.

Will also run two screens, and in extended mode if you wish, the
original LCD screen, and any CRT/LCD external off the VGA connector on
the side.

Thanks for the info Don.

It sounds like a wonderful little machine. Just one further query: How
long did you have to wait for delivery ?

Thanks
