Back on line after a year

Well, I'm back on line after a year of no internet access. It has
been boring, to say the least. I tried to set up a Google groups account
at the public library, but Google refused to accept the data. I tried
E-mailing a couple people on the group, but they either bounced, or
there were no replies.

A lot of things have happened in the past year.

Welcome back Mike.
You have been fortunate in missing a bad year here. There has been a
whole pile of OT crap about the US elections, WMD's and some person
called god. Some of the most sane people here have been seriously
wound up by this OT stuff

Hopefully this year will be a bit better

Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.
Screen. Mind. Both are blank.

Aren't you the guy that was/is in CATV? I recognize your name.

Welcome back. Hope that year wasn't too bad. Any good points?

Hello again from here too. Yep, more than a year according to my
archives. The last post of yours I have was 14th December, 2003, on
'Field Strength'.

Must say, the internet has now become such an integral part of my life
that I get withdrawal symptoms after a fortnight's holiday. So a full
year off is at first hard to contemplate.

But on further thought, I suppose I'd pretty soon revert to some other
obsession, like reading, walking - or even building electronics stuff
<g>.

I've gone over a year now without email at home. Hmm, I suppose
usenet groups can be sort of a crude replacement for email.

Maybe. I've abandoned most political commentary, even tho Jim
and a few others continually goad us with new right-wing threads.

Hurricanes, a boring, bland diet for my diabetes and high blood
pressure, I joined a local church and I am supposed to help them set up
some computer classes for the locals to teach them how to use a
computer, and a small class on computer repair. I have several
intelligent kids interested in repairing the hardware, and maybe
electronics in general.

I ignored my doctor's advice that I wouldn't get it and filed for
disability through the VA. They approved it in less than six weeks,
100% non service connected. I have more trouble walking now. Six moths
ago I could walk to my church and back for a full mile round trip in
about a half hour. The last time I tried it took an hour and 45
minutes, and I hurt like hell when I got home. At least they didn't
find any sign of cancer when I had a colonoscopy a couple months ago. :)

How about yourself?

I had a "barium enema with air" last summer after a sudden onset of
constipation and back pain. Found nothing untoward except some
diverticula. But the damned doctor inflated my gut to such a pressure
level I was in severe pain for weeks :-( I was concerned for a while
that she had perforated my intestine.

Conclusion: Don't panic until constipation goes for more than a week.
Saves you pain and money.
Cheaper to stay on your Metamucil- get over it, you're old, you have
to pay attention to stuff like that, and it is obvious from the tenor of
your posts that you are constipated all the time:

rather pricey for what they are, but maybe you can get insurance
coverage or a subsidy.
Almost all such aids are very over-priced, which is immoral. Cameras and
monitors are very cheap these days. The only item that is not so cheap,
AFAIK, is the lens.

We had a guy working here for a while who was effectively blind. He built
himself a 'reader' from an old video camera mounted vertically which he
used for printed materials and on his laptop layed out open - faced. Seemed
to work fine.

I think it's rather difficult to make a profit on such things- low
quantity, for one thing. Here the government picks up 75% of the cost
and does not tax the product, yet there is no queue of companies
waiting to supply the market.

But the components are made in high volume now. Only the mechanical
structure needs to be specially made, which should be a couple-hundred
dollars.

I haven't been able to find a good "C" mount close-up lens. I want to
put the camera on a heavy gooseneck so I can see to do some electronics
work as well. I picked up a damaged 8 mm camcorder at a thrift store for
65 cents with a decent macro lens, but I need to separate the camera
from the tape mechanism to make it small enough to use.

I am trying to find an affordable stereo microscope with zoom, but my
pension is quite small. I am going to ask the VA social worker if I can
get a grant to purchase one. I miss being able to work on anything I
can still pick up.
Welcome back! I hope getting the house fixed and stuff isn't overwhelming.
Maybe you could call Jimmy Carter. ;-)

About your vision, would it be stupid to suggest reading glasses from the
pharmacy? They can be had for $15-$20, and you can get them pretty
powerful -2.5 diopters springs to mind. Or a technician visor - they're
$30-$40.
