The World Health Organization said Monday that it would contact the researchers and review the results, Reuters reported. The organization may further analyze samples and verify the data, and the Italian researchers plan to continue their work as well.

t was also in the U.S. at that time- no question about it.

This ALWAYS happens. The public health authorities never acknowledge what they have on their hands until it comes up and bitch slaps them in the face.

12 per cent positive SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among heathy volunteers?
That infection rate would have produced herd immunity long ago.

More bogus data. Get used to it.

These weren\'t healthy volunteers, they were people being screened for lung cancer. The age range was 55-65 yo, almost all of them were current or former heavy smokers, three quarters were current smokers, etc... The samples started off at 14% positive and progressed to more than 30% by February. Sounds like they were all a symptomatic.

OK, smoking is protective against the virus.

Very cool. Unfortunately, long term smoking leads to lung disease like COPD and that is not conducive to a good prognosis when and if they are infected. Almost all these people smoked for decades. I\'m pretty sure the fact of being screened for lung cancer means they had developed ling issues or they were diagnosed with lung disease that are precursors for the development of lung cancer.

The authors are full time employees of the University of Catania in
Italy. I\'m not quite sure how to assemble that information into a
proper conspiracy theory, but it does seem like an interesting
coincidence.

It\'s not the smoking, it\'s the nicotine.

There are a multitude of ways to administer it, and burning tobacco leaf is not of them. So don\'t expect them to be setting up smoking lounges off the ICU any time soon.

Another theory at to why smokers are underrepresented in the hospitalization
surveys is that they die off so fast they\'re gone by the time the survey

Well, let\'s see if that works:

US Incidence Rate:
<https://seer.cancer.gov/explorer/application.html?site=47&data_type=1&graph_type=3&compareBy=sex&chk_sex_1=1&race=1&rate_type=2&advopt_precision=1>

US Mortality Rate:
<https://seer.cancer.gov/explorer/application.html?site=47&data_type=2&graph_type=3&compareBy=sex&chk_sex_1=1&race=1&advopt_precision=1>

US Survival Rate:
<https://seer.cancer.gov/explorer/application.html?site=47&data_type=4&graph_type=2&compareBy=sex&chk_sex_1=1&race=1&age_range=1&stage=101&survival_interval=5&advopt_precision=1&advopt_display=2>

Looks like lung cancer victims seems to die off starting at age=50.
Using 2011 as a starting point for the 5 year window:
46.6% will survive for 1 year
25.6% will survive for 2 years
19.6% will survive for 5 years
So, you\'re correct. About 80% of those who are older than 50 and get
lung cancer, will disappear from the study.

average age of those that have died of covid in Italy is ~80years, 85% over 70 years old, ~1% under 50 years old
