Toshiba 61" problem...Please help

My big screen has developed a problem. It's a Toshiba 61" about 5 years
old. It started a few months ago by, every now and again(once a week
maybe) doing a screen spread thing. It looked kinda like it was going
panaramic on me, but not bad, only spread about and inch per side. Well,
today I was adjusting the convergience and as I went to adjust position
4...it got a blue smear to the left and a yellow with it. It's only in
area 4, the rest of the picture is great.

Please let me know what to do. I do have some electronics skills and
understanding, 2 years at ITT Tech for EE. I know about the HV. :-S

Thank you,

sounds, and looks like a horrible pincussion problem in the blue.

Id direct it right to the convergence board.

a model or chassis number would help.

That looks like a standard convergence IC failure.
Quite common and not extremely costly (varies by locale)
Model number would help to refine any suggestions.
Should be similar to TP61F81 (just a numeric hint)

Good Luck,
Bill Jr

You need to troubleshoot the convergence output circuit, and/or digital
convergence module.

Easiest way is to determine which color is off and replace that colors
convergence output ic first. Make sure the heatsink compound is cleaned off
and properly applied for the new ic. If that fails to resolve the problem
then a new digital convergence module is in order (they are high failure
items).

To replace will require the Toshiba mylar screen overlay in order to set up
the green geometry, then line up the red and blue to the green. All
following the alignment procedure laid out in the service manual for the
set.

If you are very well experienced in troubleshooting high density multi-layer
circuit boards loaded with custom ic's and lots of surface mount components,
all without a schematic, you can attempt to open up the digital convergence
module and try and find the failure. The schematic is not available from
Toshiba for it.

I got the links to work.

You have to copy and paste the whole line.

The blue is got a severe pincussion problem on the left. according to teh
picture.

Sometimes when that sort of thing happens, you can right click it
also, and select the appropriate choice. It varies from browser to
browser, but is usually easy to identify.

That means trying a convergence output ic and/or check the waveforms to it,
then replacing the digital convergence module and doing a full alignment.

Unless of course you get lucky and find surface mount electrolytic
capacitors in the module bad and they have not damaged the pcb.

I am leaning more towards a convergence module from the picture.

No service bulletins issued for obvious failures.
Look on the board on the left (viewed from rear) and you will find 2
STK392-020 IC's.
Replace them both and resolder the major connections.
Don't forget to clean off the old heat sink grease and apply fresh liberal
amounts to the new IC's when installing.

Good Luck,
Bill Jr
