Yea, the Russians mounted and were able to maintain a counteroffensive when the Germans got to Kursk, Leningrad and Kiev. They did get to Hitler about 1-2 days before the US got there.

Look at the numbers. The Western Front was always a side-show. It made the Russian\'s job a lot easier, but the Russians had 6.5 million troops on the ground. and the allies in the west never had more than 4.5 million.

It helped, but what really made a difference was the use of air-power to disable the German railway system which happened very late in the war.

The western Allies would have had a much tougher job if the Russians hadn\'t basically defeated the German in the east before D-day.

The Russian offensive around Kursk was successfully concluded on the 23rd August 1943, almost a year before D-day. The western Allies success in Italy had helped, but Kursk was a much larger battle. and marks the point where the Russians had started beating the Germans.
