No, it\'s called \"logic\".

Conventional forces are no longer useful except for critically important
missions. The only purpose for NATO is to encroach close enough to Moscow
to give it first strike capability. It wouldn\'t even really matter if
Ukraine were part of NATO. The question will always be whether defending a
particular country, NATO member or not, is worth starting World War III.

You can be international outlaw with nukes. Now, all strong arm

\"The worst appears yet to come from Putin’s confusion of Russia, which
had a GDP the size of Texas before the war, with the former Russian Empire
from 100 years ago. As has been noted, “even before the invasion, Russia’s
economic capabilities were hardly capable of sustaining an empire. Now, with
foreign sanctions presiding over a plummeting Russian ruble, Russia’s economic
standing has fallen further still. If measured at today’s exchange rates,
Russia’s economy would be the 22nd largest in the world, with a gross domestic
product (GDP) not much larger than the state of Ohio’s.” How do you say
“Mississippi, here we come!” in Russian?\"

And we know EVERYONE aspires to emulate Mississippi! Even Alabama!

Yes, Russia was only capable of sustaining the lifestyles of the Chicago-school
economists and fat oligarchs they enabled in looting the country after the fall
of the Soviet Union.

Dunno.

*Many* years ago, a friend\'s sister was \"back in the states\" for a visit.
She\'d been living in Russia for ~10 years. So, I naturally quizzed her on what
it was like -- figuring she had seen US and USSR societies so could make a
comparison. The take-away from her comments was \"Everything seems cheap or
run-down... even brand new things (buildings, products, etc.)\" She jokingly
dismissed it as \"poor work ethic\".

Fast forward to ~2010 and a (new) friend who\'d emigrated from Moscow was met
with a similar set of questions. She replied (heavily accented) that things
were pretty good \"in the big cities\" (keeping in mind that she was from
Moscow). \"Other places... not so good.\" Understatement? I asked her what
day to day life was like, shopping, etc. and her eyes lit up -- \"*So* much more
to choose from, here (US)!\" And, as to why she emigrated, \"More opportunity.
If I stayed in Moscow I would have been a _________\" (as if that wasn\'t
something she aspired to be!)

[So, now *two* datapoints that give an underwwhelming assessment of \"life in
Russia\"]

Recently, I started hearing folks making comments about the impending *fall*
of Russia (\"failed state\"). And, putting hard numbers on the time frame
expected. I assumed this was \"happy talk\". Especially in light of the
\"gains\" the Ukrainians have been making against what \"should\" have been a
\"vastly superior force\".

Lots of retired/active military here so discussions often get pretty
detailed re: capabilities, processes, discipline, etc. in the armed forces.
And, speculation as to Russian and Ukrainian counterparts. The Moskva\'s
sinking was a big red light for these folks. And, Putin\'s \"explanation\"
of the event even more of a red light.

If NOT sunk by Ukranian action, it speaks volumes as to the competency
(lack thereof) of the Russian military. Poor progress by their ground
forces just reinforces this as a *systemic* problem (i.e., not just
a Navy issue). You\'d have folks believe that some inept \"comrade\"
made such a *disasterous* \"mistake\" that it caused the loss of such a
\"grand vessel\"? Something that should have been *precious*?!

If sunk by Ukranian action, then some inept comrade failed to deploy
countermeasures to protect against this type of attack (including having
the vessel positioned in such a location that it was accessible from
ground-based munitions).

I.e., there\'s no way to make the incident \"smell palatable\".

You can make up whatever explanation suits your fancy to feed (as pablum)
to The Masses. But, military professionals around the world are looking
at intelligence reports, satellite imagery, etc. AND detailed psychological
profiles of the leaders making those pronouncements and likely coming
a lot closer to a *good* assessment of your capabilities.

Sabre rattling just reinforces the appearance of a potemkin power. Now,
China\'s lap dog (it\'s clear where the power lies in THAT relationship...
even to an ex KGB officer!)

Anyway... in this discussion, someone made the same \"everything is rundown\"
comment -- which sparked my interest in the predictions of Russia\'s demise.
Google turned up lots of hits from a wide variety of reporting sources.
So, it\'s not a single prophet making the rounds but, rather, more of a
consensus opinion.

As The Rest of the World (TmReg) starts reassessing their military postures
and budgets, will Russia be able to *meet* their advances? When will the
\"Tread carefully; we have nukes\" threat lose its teeth? (imagine a tactical
nuke strike on The Kremlin and its psychological effect on the populace)

That market capitalism would\'ve been able to provide an American-style
comfortable existence for all it citizens was a joke going in and they knew it,
it was simply a pillaging exercise.

If you despise your populace, you don\'t really care as to how well their
lives may be. It will be interesting to see how people, there -- esp young
people -- take to their lifestyles degrading so far and so fast. Give it
a few months for back inventory to be exhausted and things to start breaking
with no spare parts available. Or, food shortages (wasn\'t Ukraine the
\"breadbasket\" of the SSRs?). Or, lack of mobility.

\"That grey woolen coat looks GOOD on you, comrade! Here\'s a scarf to
bundle up your hair while you wait in line for your 3-day-old loaf of bread...\"

\"hypersonic cruise missiles\"

We do not have hypersonic missiles, but Russia sure does...

General: \"Mr. President, Russia used hypersonic missiles!\"
The President: \"Unleash the non-binaries.\"
General: \"Nooo! NOT THE NON-BINARIES!!!\"

The group idiot, a.k.a. Always Wrong, with its difficult to decipher
nym...

What does the claim \'no longer useful\' mean, if you make an exception
for \'critically important\'...?

It sure sounds like nonsense to me.

Huh? What does proximity matter, the entire world is one day\'s
travel from any spot on the planet.

There\'s multiple hidden launch sites, including
mobile ones under the ocean surface, to prevent ANY \'first strike\'
from being successful. Second claim is nonsense just like the first.

\"The worst appears yet to come from Putin’s confusion of Russia, which
had a GDP the size of Texas before the war, with the former Russian
Empire
from 100 years ago. As has been noted, “even before the invasion,
Russia’s
economic capabilities were hardly capable of sustaining an empire.
Now, with
foreign sanctions presiding over a plummeting Russian ruble, Russia’s
economic
standing has fallen further still. If measured at today’s exchange
rates,
Russia’s economy would be the 22nd largest in the world, with a gross
domestic
product (GDP) not much larger than the state of Ohio’s.” How do you say
“Mississippi, here we come!” in Russian?\"

And we know EVERYONE aspires to emulate Mississippi!  Even Alabama!

Yes, Russia was only capable of sustaining the lifestyles of the
Chicago-school economists and fat oligarchs they enabled in looting
the country after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Dunno.

*Many* years ago, a friend\'s sister was \"back in the states\" for a visit.
She\'d been living in Russia for ~10 years.  So, I naturally quizzed her
on what
it was like -- figuring she had seen US and USSR societies so could make a
comparison.  The take-away from her comments was \"Everything seems cheap
or run-down... even brand new things (buildings, products, etc.)\"  She
jokingly
dismissed it as \"poor work ethic\".

Fast forward to ~2010 and a (new) friend who\'d emigrated from Moscow was
met
with a similar set of questions.  She replied (heavily accented) that
things
were pretty good \"in the big cities\" (keeping in mind that she was from
Moscow).  \"Other places... not so good.\"  Understatement?  I asked her what
day to day life was like, shopping, etc. and her eyes lit up -- \"*So*
much more
to choose from, here (US)!\"  And, as to why she emigrated, \"More
opportunity.
If I stayed in Moscow I would have been a _________\" (as if that wasn\'t
something she aspired to be!)

[So, now *two* datapoints that give an underwwhelming assessment of
\"life in
Russia\"]

If Putin mistook some expressions of wistfulness on the part of some in
former Soviet republics like Ukraine for the Soviet Union itself, or for
a longing for Russia itself, I think he was badly mistaken, they tended
to love the jobs that the Soviet Union provided, not Russia or the rest
of the Soviet Union\'s ideas.

It was largely an oligarchic racket same as Russia is now but for a
period of time similar to the period of nostalgia the boomers in the US
sometimes have, 1950-1980, the racket was decently productive and able
to provide some good jobs in the republics also, and put workers in
steel plants making ships and planes, and farmers in fields cranking out
grain and produce.

The market reforms that followed were better about putting McDonalds on
street corners and more Western products in stores, but less effective
on the employment front in the former republics particularly.

Lots of silly predictions in Newsweek and other mainstream media. World
renowned diplomats have predicted the disaster Ukraine has become,
spurred by NATO expansion to Russia\'s border countries.

THAT is the core of the problem. We reneged on all the assurances we
gave Russia after the USSR collapsed 30 years ago. Putin is now forced
to act to prevent himself ending up in the exact same position as Jack
Kennedy in the US back in \'62 and only a brainwashed fool would be
unable to understand that simple concept.
For a good time, check out Fox News\'s channel...

https://www.youtube.com/user/FoxNewsChannel/videos

Or even their business channel...

https://www.youtube.com/user/FoxBusinessNetwork/videos

Search the page for videos about Ukraine and read the comments. Regular
Fox News viewers are BASHING the heck out of them in the comment sections.
It\'s a bloodbath. Similar thing happens with neocon Newsmax uploads...

https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsmaxtvLive/videos

Most Americans and probably most non-neocon non-liberal Europeans are
against participating in that war.

John Doe is a lunatic. His idea of \"most Americans\" includes only the lunatic fringe that is nearly as silly as he is.

https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2022/03/15/public-expresses-mixed-views-of-u-s-response-to-russias-invasion-of-ukraine/

Apparently some 33% of Americans favour direct US intervention even at the risk of a nuclear response from Russia, so there seem to be quite few left-wing lunatics in the US.
Or perhaps they think that Putin is sane enough to recognise the certainty that Russia would be wiped out in such an exchange. It\'s not an assumption I\'d be happy to make.
42% of Americans do think that the US isn\'t doing enough to support the Ukraine.
