!@#$%&*

I've done all the things that are supposed to stop "Findfast", but
it's still running, as I can view its logs.

BUT it's not showing in Start Menu (Win2K)

Anyone know how to kill the !@#$%&* permanently?

Download msconfig for Win XP. It works for 2K and lets you look at your
real startup files, not that almost useless startup folder. There are a
couple copies on the internet, or if you want, I can email you mine.
Thanks, I'll download from M$.

Hello Jim,

Or so I thought. Had to rename findfast.* to xfindfast.* to kill the
!@#$%&*.
Just make sure that nothing keeps calling Findfast or the PC might
regularly go to Lalaland.

Have you tried deleting findfast.exe ?

Best regards,
Spehro Pefhany
IIRC, I have always found it in the Office(Word) options, from within the
Office(Word) program itself. I hate FindFast. I have always found that
it causes more problems and delays, than it helps, anything.

The newer operating systems are "self-healing" and will automatically
restore operating system files that are "accidentally" deleted. I can't
even delete the game Solitare (sol.exe file :)

Sounds like that gator-whatever virus thingie. You delete bits of it,
but unless you get every bit, it recreates itself like some kind of
Hollywood monster or cancerous tumor.

And of course when there is some corruption, the corrupted file can't be
replaced manually. Really nice. :-(

Now you know why we have a policy at work. If it seems to be a problem
with the OS, re-image it. It's futile to do otherwise.

I wonder if it's possible to just replace the file with another one that
won't execute. With luck(?) the OS will see that it's the wrong size
and also replace it. :-(

Apparently you don't have any hot-shot IT guys around? :) I've worked with
guys who could resurrect pretty much any system in far less time than
re-imaging/restoring a user's settings/programs/etc. would take!

No, Windows calculates some fancy hash of the new file and will replace it
unless it's correct. There's effectively zero chance that a simple file copy
operatoin will go unnoticed.

Realitically, I think Windows File Protection has saved a lot more peoples'
systems than it's broken. Sort of like seat bealts, vaccines, etc... It's
also trivial to disable if you know what you're doing and do want to monkey
around with the files.

We've got hot-shot IT guys around and we've determined that if they have
to do the level of support you suggest, taking as much time as that
level of support requires, we would need several scores more of
hot-shots to 'take care' of the several thousand PCs we have. So we do
as well as we can with the few people we have, and that's that. I have
no problem giving the level of supoport you suggest, but only on my own
PC at home.

As for time, it takes no more time than it takes to boot up a
preconfig'd CD-ROM. What I'm saying, for example, is it's foolish to
take so much time to resurrect a corrupted system when it's not
necessary if the system can be quickly restored from a current backup.
In other words, you don't have to dig the poopoo out from around you if
you don't let yourself get buried in doo-doo to begin with. ;-)

Something else I forgot to mention. When students turn into malicious
vandals and infect PCs in a classroom with virus/worms, it becomes
necessaary to re-image whole classrooms at a time. And then there are
the class changes that make it necessary to re-image the whole
classroom.

At one time we had numerous classrooms with every PC having a removeable
hard disk drive. But the good ones were expensive, and with high speed
server, switch and backbone, and multicasting, the whole classroom can
now be done in a short time.

Maybe it's *name* is "Findfast" although it really should be "Legion" - or
at least one of the abundant eGator derivatives.

Gator and a few others "itracker" and especially the loathsome "mxtarget"
that hijacks the clipboard (and the machine), will replicate themselves as
known system services, assuming their names, to avoid detection.

Usually a few pardners will always run to start the others again when they
are killed.

"Spybot Search & Destroy" http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html finds most of
them!

Spybot didn't find anything. Scan Spyware didn't find anything.
Ad-Aware didn't find anything. NAV didn't find anything.

However. I was rummaging thru Task Manager logs and found that
"spnsrvnt.exe" was using lots of CPU time.

All I can find on "spnsrvnt.exe" is, if it's legal and not "same
name", is something to do with Rainbow Sentinel dongles.

I renamed it and the hard-drive busy-ness seems to have ceased.

I have two programs that use Rainbow Sentinel dongles, GDSVU, which is
working, and ttSpiceWorks, which seems to be working, but I haven't
checked it with any circuit besides samples.

This guy has a replacement for MSCONFIG that's better in some ways. It lets
you move things around besides deleting.
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

He also has a super little program called StartupMonitor that will ask you
for confirmation whenever anything tries to insert itself into any of the
startup folders or registry keys.
