So it\'s effectively a free vaccine, available around the globe? Sounds like potentially very good news.

I wouldn\'t rely on it. The fact about 30% of regular infections don\'t produce any symptoms at all doesn\'t stop it making 10% of the infected pretty sick and and killing a few of them (more if they are as old as I am).

Indeed! Certainly beats an imuno-supressive clot-shot by a country
mile.

You\'re a fucking retard, boy.

NONE of the 3 vaccines in use here have ANY immuno-suppressive
effect. The ONLY effect would be that you cannot immunize against
other threats for at least 30 days after a shot.
And NONE cause ANY \"clotting\", you fucking retard.

And from the stupid shit you spout from your upper anus, not only do
you not know a fucking thing about this pandemic, but you also have
zero clue as to just what a country mile is.

We will find out very very soon. South Africa has a very young
demographic so you wouldn\'t expect them to be badly affected.

UK had nearly 30k new omicron cases yesterday (out of 78k) and another
40k today (in addition to the baseline of 50k of the delta variant).

Working back from today\'s numbers and the geographic locations where it
now accounts for more than 50% of cases the original locus of infection
was the COP26 conference in Glasgow and tourists in London.

https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-omicron-overtakes-delta-as-dominant-coronavirus-variant-in-london-as-cases-surge-across-uk-12496452

Doubling time is estimated to be around 2-3 days for omicron in the UK\'s
rather too relaxed setting where the government has been saying until
yesterday don\'t cancel your Xmas parties. Yesterday was the watershed
when we had more new daily Covid cases than at any time in the pandemic!

We still have football matches, large venues and discos open. Some shows
in London have had to close because key members of the cast have Covid
and football matches because of players catching it.

Give it another week and omicron cases will exceed the delta cases here
by some margin and we will like last year be forced into lockdown for
Xmas (it is that or allow the NHS to collapse completely).

Hard to know which choice our \"government\" will take this time. They
have managed to ignore the scientists for just long enough to let things
get completely out of control again. It is like GroundHog Day here :(

Quite informative. It seems the \"R\" value for Omicron is probably in
excess of 4!

year. It\'s here:

I didn\'t see it but I\'m not at all surprised. The cases per day graph
has become exceedingly steep. I really don\'t like R as a measure - it is
far too sloppy. The case doubling time is a much more direct measure and
much harder to fake. R depends on to many unmeasurable assumptions up to
and including which side of bed the researcher got out of!

It is certainly looking that way. I got my Pfizer booster yesterday so I
need to stay out of trouble for another 10 days. I hope this may be
fairly easy since the NE is mercifully free of omicron for the moment.

The recent explosion (like last years) is almost certainly due to end of
university term plus one incubation period spreading the novel omicron
infection from London, Glasgow and Edinburgh to all over the country.
(last years Xmas present from the students was alpha)

At least this modern plague only kills at most 1% of the population.

We could do with a few high profile refusenik footballers expiring from
it since they seem determined to set a very bad example. More than half
the scheduled matches are now cancelled due to teams having Covid.

I think it helps when the public have been used to hearing that \"The R
is about 1.8, and that\'s too high\". I\'m sure that even the
mathematically-challenged understand that 4 is greater than 1.8!

I wonder why, but I can\'t see it lasting once it gets going.

I think that we\'ll soon have to change the definition of \"educational
establishment\" to a \"place of learning and infection spread...\".

A couple of weeks ago we were asked to babysit the grandchildren. We
picked them up from school, and on arrival later in the evening our
daughter said \"We are all fine, we\'ve been having LFTs for the last
couple of days\". When I asked why, she said that the kids\' school had
lots of children off having tested positive for Covid. Although our
granddaughter\'s class was ok, our grandson\'s had quite a few off. We
were told that the children sitting at the desks on his left and right,
and in front were all off having tested positive! Fortunately, we\'d had
our booster a month earlier, so I wasn\'t too concerned.

But, to misquote a long-dead politician, \"A week is a long time in the
life of an omicron virion.\"

The US infection numbers are ramping up briskly and the death rate is turning upward again. We never did recover from the increased numbers from the Delta variant and now we are seeing the Omicron variant kicking into high gear.

I don\'t know of this is entirely due to Omicron though. In the last few months many US states have removed mask mandates. That has got to have an impact as more and more people start feeling more comfortable with risky behavior. We seem to go through repeated cycles of ignoring the virus followed by enacting measures then ignoring it again. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
