Odd VCR behavior.

Guest
Just received a recorded tape from father in law. He taped it on his
JVC recorder in the EP mode.

On my Zenith VCR it will not play the sound, or more accurately the
sound is just barely present. I took the tape to my Samsung VCR.
It does the same thing exact thing, barely audible. I then concluded
that my father in laws VCR is out of wack because that tape will play
on his VCR but not my two VCR's. ...............BUT WAIT

I took the tape to my father in laws other VCR, a Panasonic, and it
works just fine. This play ability is what is odd to me.

Who's got the defective VCR's? Me or him?

Have some of the recorders got Hi Fi tracks as well as linear audio. This
could explain the odd behaviour, if you have a tape recorded with dirty
heads on the linear tracks you can still play the FM Hi Fi tracks ok.
John.

EP is so touchy that many times the tapes will not play back successfully in
the machine in which they were recorded with any kind of fidelity. Once you
slow down the tape by two thirds, any kind of instability in the machine
shows up.
