** Oh boy, I see this one - but I dooaaan believe it ........

And another thing, you petty child. Toroidal core transformers are classed
and commonly refered to as 'Air Core' transformers. In this case, the
'Air' refers to the hole in the middle (i.e in the 'Core') THAT YOU CAN
SEE.

** Weell - bugger me.

I never woulda thought of that one in a thousand years.

And I'm still not thinking it.

Iron cores (or Steel Core) transformers commonly have a hole in the middle
(of the Iron) as well, but you can't see it.

** Gotta be real careful of those invisible holes in transformers.

Try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformer#Steel_cores

Wikipedia classifies Toroidal core transformers as "Air core" transformers.

See Section 5.1.3.

If the 'Air' (as in 'Air Core') isn't a reference to the hole in the middle,
then I am buggered if I know what 'Air' it is a reference to.

Because something is not visible does not logically give it the property of
invisibility. I won't bother to explain it.

I realize that there may be a divergence of terminology here, but you know
perfectly well what I mean.

p.s. Hey, do you still *remember* that I knew something you didn't?

You didn't know that a voltage doubling rectifier CAN BE built from a simple
half wave rectifier design, and I did. Now, how is that for a Hoot, eh?

I think you are referring to the category ABOVE toroidal - which
refers to air-core transformers
as a separate category.

That is one of the most fundamental aspects of basic electronics.
Everyone here with an electronics background knows it, and every time
you trumpet about how clever you are, you prove your lack of knowledge.
If you hadn't been so secretive about what you think you're trying
to do, it would have been clear to everyone from the start that your
circuit must have voltage multipliers in it.
You've fiddled with something which was working properly and now it
doesn't work properly. Why don't you take it to someone who knows about
electronics and get your mess sorted out?
I once repaired a Yamaha amplifier which someone had modified by
ripping out some of the signal wiring and soldering in lengths of
Monster speaker cable - with Bakers Fluid as flux (I'm serious!) to make
it "sound better". Your experiment with audiophile capacitors isn't very
different. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Just take it to someone who knows electronics, tell him what you
did, and give us some peace here will you?

Actually, the wiki page doesnt claim that a toroid is an air-cored
transformer anyway.

You don't know even the basics of common generic 3-terminal voltage
