First you have to pick one person to be 'IT'.

As in Information Technology?
Of course not. IT is just *so* WAS. No one hires ITs anymore.

Strange to find myself agreeing with Jim,

If you stuck to electronics, you'd find a great deal of common ground.
You'll never change each other's politics, so why not relax and enjoy
the engineering?

I'm with you bro'. Notice how nicely JT and Win play together
despite having opposite political views?

Yep, Win is a delightful fellow. We've even tipped a few together
(glasses of wine, that is ;-)

How much *are* your glasses of wine, anyway?

Three fluey dancers, as my Australian friend says. He is fluent in
Strine.

Huh? I'm fluent in dancers, not Strine.

There are 16 fluey dancers in a US pint, I believe.

That would be how big they are. Jim was talking about a per diem
allowance that wouldn't cover 2 glasses of wine.

Must not be much of a dance, if they've all got the flu.

I had a friend who put a glass of XXO on his expense account. It bounced.
He was then advised to "spread out" his expenses over the week, since he
was otherwise under the "advisable limit". He responded that they were
instructing him to commit fraud. The issue was dropped.

I've had problems justifying a Ford Taurus on long driving business trips.
Come on folks, we're talking $2/day. Boy did they get pissed when I had
a Town Car (the rental agency didn't want to rent it to a flat-lander, so
gave it to me).

One I got a few times was "which do you like doing better, software
development or hardware design?" Doesn't matter, the position is for
maintenance of already-in-the-market hardware and software.
Then there was the "which do you like, the 8051, 68000 or {third
processor their product used]?" and I said the 68000, then they
explained it was the 8051 they were looking for someone to do some
code enhancements on. Since then, all my 'preference' answers are
non-committal: "Oh yes, I'd be just as happy to work on a Pentium as
on a Pic or RCA 1802 for your next Nuclear Power Plant Controller..."

I interviewed with HP once. I sat down, the guy glanced at my resume,
and he said, "The first thing you have to decide is whether you're an
engineer or a programmer." I thanked him and left.

At any rate, I was "interviewed" by six children, who couldn't find
their own assholes, using both hands and a mirror.

I was not hired... "lack of experience" ;-)
I was made redundant by the British division of a large American
electronics and Defence company based in Massachusetts last year. It
took me about 8 months to get another job - I'm certain there is a lot
of ageism out there. Even when it is not overt, younger people seem
uncomfortable at the thought of hiring older workers. They know damn
well that we have experience but use a whole range of "reasons" to
turn us down. Just console yourself with the thought that it's their
loss!
