Anyone know the manufacturer on this? It's a high flux SMT LED that is
"welded" to a metal substrate

Isn't that a Luxeon Star?

Good guess, but no luck...I checked and it's not a Stanley part either.

I'm determined to get to the bottom of this mystery! The folks I know
in the LED biz don't want to spill the beans on who their competitors
are it seems.

It doesn't look all that unusual to me. It's a modified lead-frame
version (for better heat sinking) of the regular old high-output
square LEDs. Similar to (but not the same as) Lumileds SnapLED
products.
