HP 3si printer problem

Hi
I have a HP 3SI. It has developed a problem. It prints
OK but the drum seems to retain a little bit of toner that
ends up making smudges on later pages. I've tried replacing
the cartridge. I got a book and it mentions an eraser lamp.
I looked everywhere and can't find one in this machine.
The print is otherwise fine.
What am I up against. It is a pain to print 20 blank pages
to get one clean one.
Thanks
Dwight

I think the lamp is located above the toner cartridge. If not, perhaps
it is inside the toner cartridge.

I would not expect the lamp to cause this problem. Are you getting
"ghosts" of your printout? That is, does the image repeat a few inches
down the page? If so, post the distance between the original image
and the ghost image. That will help narrow down what might cause
the problem.

Is there any toner spilled inside the printer? Any deposits of toner
can show up on your printouts and cause smudges.

The parts that often cause smudges are the fusor, and the transfer
roller. Check the condition of those parts. The transfer roller can
cause smudges if toner gets spilled on it.

It is also possible that the high voltage supply for the toner cartridge
is starting to go.

A place to help you identify parts is:

There are diagrams for many parts showing where they are located
inside the printer.
