How to electronically track a net floating at Sea??

Looking for something reasonably inexpensive to retrieve a float out at sea.
Would like about 2-3 mile range. If I could somehow use my FM radio that
would be great but I'm open to any ideas.

what about a GSM module that can be used to send text msg on trigger or
regular intervals. This easy to build and requires no maintenance. You could
expand it to GPRS module but i dont know about this as you probably dont
want images from the Nets location.

GSM modules can also be expanded to include GPS or simple GPS but this would
more expensive. But would give the precise lotion and tracking info on your
Net.

I'm jumping into the middle of a thread here. so forgive me if someone
has already answered............

Radio amateurs. regularly stage hunts for hidden transmitters. They
use the "ham bands." It is a game to hide the transmitter and see how
long it takes to find it. I think they call it "Fox and Hounds"

They take advantage of structure to reflect the signal (like water
towers, radio antenna, large buildings) to make the signal harder to
find. What you want to do is easier . . . make the signal easy to
find within one to three miles....

With a simple VHF FM modulated transmitter you can use an ordinary FM
band transmitter (less than 100 milliwatt to stay legal) and broadcast
a signal in all directions from you net. Miles over water is no
problem - the height of the antenna must (should) be over the horizon
(four miles for a small boat and both antennas five feet from the
surface) Large swells, and the signal might become erratic, but both
the receiver and transmitter will be at the top of the swell sometime
.. . Takes some experience to get it right in high seas.

The locating devices are just as easy- you want to locate them out of
the ham bands - but FM 88-108 MHZ is just as easy - easier since you
don't need a fancy receiver just an FM radio and directional antenna

Search for "Fox and Hound," "hidden transmitter hunt" and you will
probably find what you want. Reply if you don't - this is an
interesting challenge since I like to fish.

Some of the lingo hams use is hard to understand.... they developed
it from the time of morse code . . .
