Earth loop, the cause ?

I know how to create an earth loop but what causes it and how do I stop it ?

I have two PA amps that work perfectly, but if I connect a slave output from
one into the other I get a great deal of mains hum. HELP.

IF the link is a 2 wire link disconnect the screen from one end. This will
remove the loop, and as lomg as both amps are properly earthed there are no
safety issues.Try it to see if it works before you go to the expense of
isolating transformers.

Try putting an isolation transformer on the slave cable. I'll bet
that the inputs/outputs/cable are all unbalanced(1 signal and 1
ground).
