Ans Machine / Phone problem

I have a digital answering machine with a built on cordless phone.
In another room, I have a regular wired phone.
If someone calls me, and the machine starts recording, if I am in the
other room, and pickup the wired phone, the phone keeps clicking and
the caller can not hear me, until I shut off the ans. machine. That
means running to the other end of the house, and by that time the
caller hangs up.

Has anyone ever had this problem?
Any idea how to fix it?

Your answering machine is too dumb to hang up the line when someone picks
up an extension. What you need is a box that plugs between the wall and
the answering machine and disconnects the answering machine when someone
picks up. MPJ&A used to sell one, stock #8895-TT, but I don't know if
they still do. If they don't have it you could Google for
"answering machine disconnect" (with the quotes) or call some of your
local electronics stores.

If the answering machine (check the manual) is supposed to disconnect when

an extension is picked up, check the polarity of the phone wiring, verifying
that red/green or black/yellow is consistant throughout the installation.
Sometimes this throws off the hold/disconnect functions. Also check whether
there are 'line' switches on the phones. My old Panasonic phones had these,
but I never could exactly figure them out. I believe the (long lost) manual
mentioned something like the above...or maybe they were for reducing the
REN....
