I am new to synopsys and am trying to understand how I might appreciate the
contents of the virtex2 library files, such as xdcf_virtex2-6.db. Is there a
convenient way to view the contents of these binary files other then a hex
editor.

You have to check if there is the file xdcf_virtex2-6.lib.
The .db library files are compiled file of .lib, .lib are
text file.
You can see same proprety of library with command that
work with library, type follow command for show these
commands:
help *lib*
this command work in tcl mode.
