Anyone have experience with Digi-Key robotics kits? Or another source for robotics kits for college EE's?

The kit you mention does not include the controller. Here's the
manufacturer's page:

The Parallax kits are very easy to use and understand. Arduino-based
kits are another good choice. A lot depends upon what you want to do,
and how much you're willing to spend.
